This article intends to analyse the book On ecclesiastical power, by Gilles of Rome, through his own historical context. By doing so, it reviews some concepts developed during the dispute between secular power and the Church in the late Middle Ages, and its connection with the political theory of Gilles of Rome. The article identifies some innovative elements in Gilles’ theory that can be linked to modern absolutism, in spite of their distinct assumptions.
